Pre-Vasectomy Instructions
Please review this checklist carefully to make sure your vasectomy day goes smoothly.
Most patients find this procedure quick, comfortable, and straightforward when properly prepared.
๐ฉธ 1. Medications & Supplements
โ Stop aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve) 7 days before your vasectomy.
โ Avoid the following vitamins and supplements for 7 days before your procedure:
โโโซ๏ธ Fish oil (Omega-3 fatty acids)
โโโซ๏ธ Vitamin E
โโโซ๏ธ Turmeric or curcumin
โโโซ๏ธ Ginkgo biloba
โโโซ๏ธ Garlic supplements
โโโซ๏ธ Ginseng
โโโซ๏ธ St. Johnโs wort or other herbal blends
โ If you take prescription blood thinners (Eliquis, Xarelto, Plavix, or Coumadin), contact our office for specific instructions.
๐งผ 2. Hygiene & Shaving
โ Shower the night before or morning of your procedure.
โ Wash the genital area thoroughly with soap and water.
โ Trim or shave the front of the scrotum (do not shave the entire area).
โ Do not apply lotions, creams, or powders afterward.
๐ 3. Clothing
โ Wear snug briefs or compression shorts to your appointment for support afterward.
โ Bring or wear loose pants or shorts for comfort on the way home.
๐ฝ 4. Food & Drink
โ Eat a light meal the day of your vasectomy โ no fasting required.
โ Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after.
โ Stay hydrated but minimize caffeine that morning.
๐ 5. Day of Procedure
โ Arrive 10 minutes early to complete any paperwork.
โ Expect the procedure to take about 15โ20 minutes under local anesthesia.
โ You may drive yourself home, unless taking an oral sedative โ then please arrange a ride. Proof of driver will be required prior to beginning procedure.
๐ง 6. At-Home Preparation
โ Have ice packs (frozen bag of peas) ready for the first 24โ48 hours.
โ Stock acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen for mild soreness.
โ Plan to rest for the remainder of the day after your vasectomy.
