Post-Vasectomy Care
Following these instructions carefully will help ensure a smooth, comfortable recovery. Most men feel back to normal within a few days.
Watch Before You Leave
Recovery Instructions
πActivity
- βRest for the remainder of the day.
- βAvoid strenuous activity, lifting >15 lbs, or exercise for 7 days.
- βGradually resume normal activities after one week as tolerated.
π©²Support & Comfort
- βWear snug briefs or compression shorts for the first 5β7 days.
- βApply an ice pack to the scrotum for 20 minutes every hour as needed, for the first 24 hours.
πPain Management
- βMild soreness or bruising is expected.
- βTake acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as per instructions on the bottle.
- βAvoid aspirin for 48 hours unless prescribed.
πΏHygiene
- βShower after 24 hours.
- βDo not submerge the incision (bath, pool, jacuzzi) for 14 days.
- βKeep the area clean and dry between showers.
β€οΈSexual Activity
- βAvoid ejaculation and sexual activity for 7 days.
- βContinue to use contraception until a semen analysis confirms you are sperm-free.
- βYou are not sterile immediately β this typically takes 3 months or 20 ejaculations.
π§ͺFollow-Up Testing
- βUtilize the Fellow Mail-in Testing Kit at 3 months. You will be receiving a reminder to perform the test.
- βThe vasectomy is considered successful only after the kit states that you have met passing criteria.
π¨ When to Call Us
Contact the office immediately if you experience:
- Increasing pain, swelling, or redness
- Fever > 100.4 Β°F
- Persistent bleeding or drainage
- Significant bruising or scrotal enlargement
