Pre-Vasectomy Checklist
Please review this checklist carefully to make sure your vasectomy day goes smoothly. Most patients find this procedure quick, comfortable, and straightforward when properly prepared.

π©ΈMedications & Supplements
- βStop aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve) 7 days before your vasectomy.
- βAvoid the following vitamins and supplements for 7 days before your procedure:
- β«οΈFish oil (Omega-3 fatty acids)
- β«οΈVitamin E
- β«οΈTurmeric or curcumin
- β«οΈGinkgo biloba
- β«οΈGarlic supplements
- β«οΈGinseng
- β«οΈSt. John's wort or other herbal blends
- βIf you take prescription blood thinners (Eliquis, Xarelto, Plavix, or Coumadin), contact our office for specific instructions.
π§ΌHygiene & Shaving
- βShower the night before or morning of your procedure.
- βWash the genital area thoroughly with soap and water.
- βTrim or shave the front of the scrotum (do not shave the entire area).
- βDo not apply lotions, creams, or powders afterward.
πClothing
- βWear snug briefs or compression shorts to your appointment for support afterward.
- βBring or wear loose pants or shorts for comfort on the way home.
π½Food & Drink
- βEat a light meal the day of your vasectomy β no fasting required.
- βAvoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after.
- βStay hydrated but minimize caffeine that morning.
πDay of Procedure
- βArrive 10 minutes early to complete any paperwork.
- βExpect the procedure to take about 15β20 minutes under local anesthesia.
- βYou may drive yourself home, unless taking an oral sedative β then please arrange a ride. Proof of driver will be required prior to beginning procedure.
π§At-Home Preparation
- βHave ice packs (frozen bag of peas) ready for the first 24β48 hours.
- βStock acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen for mild soreness.
- βPlan to rest for the remainder of the day after your vasectomy.
